E' un po' come mettere insieme rel nofollow e target blank.

L'attributo "external" dichiara come esterna, non parte del sito, la risorsa linkata.

Per quanto sia più diffuso l'uso del semplice rel="nofollow", Google riconosce l'attributo nofollow anche quando è inserito insieme ad altri attributi di relazione.
